Hanks' next role was as astronaut and commander Jim Lovell in the 1995 docudrama Apollo 13. This reunited Hanks with Ron Howard. The performances in the film and Kevin Bacon's portrayal were well-received by reviewers. The film received nominations for the Academy Awards nine times and it was awarded two. Later that year, Hanks starred in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated film Toy Story (1995), as the voice of Sheriff Woody. The following year, Hanks made his directorial debut with the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) about the rise and decline of a pop group from the 1960s as well as the part of a music producer. Time magazine's Richard Schickel called it "charming", while most critics agree that Hanks performance earned him a place among the top romantic-comedy stars his generation.
